Historical heritage sites can have numerous meanings, even conflicting narratives among different population groups. Understanding and incorporating these distinctive perspectives, as well as the ethical aspects is a particular challenge in the communication and interpretation of difficult and dark heritage.

In this ever-changing communication landscape, heritage and tourism site managers must also think about new ways of communicating, reaching audiences and building narratives.

Addressing these questions is key to being heard by local residents and tourists, and involving them in the discussion, particularly when it comes to young people or the digital generation.

This section calls on researchers from various fields to share the results of their research and ideas, and spark a multifaceted conversation on difficult heritage and dark tourism.

This conference section as a part of the project “Difficult Heritage: Between the Memorisation and Contemporary Tourism Production and Consumption. The Case of Holocaust Sites in Latvia” (MemoTours), project No. lzp-2019/1-0241” is funded by the Latvian Council of Science.
